In November 2023, the Supreme Court of the Russian Federation labeled the “international LGBT movement” as “extremist.”
Human rights defenders see this act as an effort to add to the anti-Western narrative that fuels Russian President Vladimir Putin’s power.
LGBTQ+ Russians — including artists like Gena Marvin — who speak up in defiance of the laws and/or leadership of their country are leaving Russia for their safety and security and to be able to continue to shine a light on government-led injustice. Many of those who choose to stay in the country are becoming increasingly isolated; many feel the need to hide their queer identity.
The QUEENDOM team is doing what we can to support organizations that provide aid to queer Russians — both those who must leave and those who stay — as well as Russian artists who are in living in exile after speaking up in defiance of the Russian Federation.
